The Elementary and High School of Quakers for both sexes had their closing party on Friday night in the meeting house at Lombard, near Eutaw Street. The offering deserves all recognition; the performances in German and French were especially surprising. Sylvan Lehmayer declamed the “Raum für meine Ellenbogen” quite well. In general, the German Dialogues, a scene of “spa treatments” (Rose Hecht, E. C. Price and H. Cassard), “the compassionate girl” (Fannie Hecht, Lavinia C. Emrich and Walter H. Stanley), “the battle” (Charles H. Riley), the declamatory “the Lorelei” (J. Spencer Atkinson), and the “Watch on the Rhine” (Samuel G. Wilmer), were well liked. The farewell speech was given by Eldridge C. Price on behalf of the graduates.
In the year under review the institute counted 208 pupils in three divisions, among them Edith L. and Joh. Sickel, Rose Hecht, W. Albert Hoffman, Louis Cohen, Emma and Marie J. Fassbinder, Fannie Hecht, W. C. Hirsch, TM Hoffman, Franz Kaufmann , B. Franz Kühne, Christian K. Keßler, Emma Bauer, three siblings Lehmayer, A. M. Levy, Geo. E. and Marie B. Numsen, siblings Oppenheimer, H. W. Reinhard, F.J. Schullenberg, Clara E. Schreiner, Marie F. van Reuth u. f. w.
Principal of the institution is Mr. Eli M. Lamb; On the whole, the teaching staff consists of ten Persons. Mrs. Bertha Schaus, an educated German lady, teaches German and French; she lived in Paris for a long time. Eduard van Reuth directs the drawing and painting lessons. Price im Namen der Abiturienten.
