Commencement 1874

Friends’ Elementary and High School. The tenth annual exhibition of the Friends’ Elementary and High School, Eli M. Lamb principal, took place last night in the Friends’ meeting house, on West Lombard street, near Eutaw street, and was largely attended. The programme embraced original essays, declamations, dialogues, &c., four languages being spoken in the several exercises, viz: English, German, French, and Latin. The scholars who participated were Solomon Hecht, Virginia C. Massie, George F. Gephart, Walter H. Staley, Harry C. Shryock, E. May French, Alcæus Hooper, Lizzie Bond, Frank M. Dushane, Ella Hollander, Charles P. Blackburn, Kate A. Frames, Eloise B. Lewis, George W. Boswell, Emma G. Logan, and Kate S. Reese. There was no singing or music of any kind, which is generally a distinguishing feature in the commencement exercises of all other schools.
The principal, Mr. Lamb, read the report of the school year, representing the institution to be in a flourishing condition, a larger number of pupils than usual having attended the past year. The roll numbers 290 pupils, with an average attendance of 260. The scholars are divided into twelve classes. Four of the pupils, namely, Martin Lehmayer, George P. Gilmour, Sylvon Lehmayer and Kate S. Reese, reached the highest attainable standing, a yearly average of 9. A large number of term and yearly certificates were distributed among the scholars entitled thereto. The pupils taking part in the exercises received bouquets, and were applauded by the audience. [THE (Baltimore) SUN., Saturday, June 20th 1874, pg. 4, col. 4]
